The Power of a Praying Couple

Biblical Prayers to Pray for Your Marriage & Life Together

A fruitful life—Psalm 1

Lord, may we delight in doing everything You want us to, and daily meditate on Your word so we will be like a tree planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail.

Affection and honor—Romans 12:10

Empower us to love each other with a genuine affection and delight in honoring each other (NLT).

Becoming a good listener—James 1:19

Lord, help me to be slow to speak, quick to listen, and slow to anger.

Living in gratefulness—1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Fill our marriage with thankfulness and grant me the perseverance to keep on praying.

Seeing our spouse through eyes of faith—1 Peter 3:7, 8-12

Father, help us to see each other through eyes of faith and grant us the grace to respond to each other as the new creations in Christ that we are instead of reacting to each other’s old natures. Help us to treat each other with consideration and respect as heirs together of the grace of life.

The love that covers—1 Peter 4:8

Lord Jesus, grant me the love that covers a multitude of sins. Fill me with Your unfailing love for my spouse which is inexhaustible and never runs out.

A clean heart—Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart toward my spouse and everyone in my life, past and present; renew a right spirit within me.

When we’re in conflict

Lord, give us eyes to see so that instead of recoiling from one another, we may ask, “What do you want me to see?” “What is in my past?” “What fruit am I reaping? What seed have I sown?” Give us eyes to see it and then repent of it, so that our altercations may turn out to be blessings rather than only hurts. Give us the insight and ability to pray and to get with each other against the problem instead of against each other. –John and Paula Sandford

Glorify the Lord—John 17:20-23

Father, glorify Yourself and Your name through our marriage. May we be one even as You and Your Son are one, and our home be a lighthouse to shed Your love and truth to our children, family, friends, neighbors, and a watching world.

“Cheri, I just want to thank you for your book PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE. I already have enjoyed it so much. Each year I look forward to a new devotional and pray for the Lord to lead me to the one He has for me that year. This year He brought me to your book. I have been going through a few difficult years. I have been a pastor’s wife for 29 years til my husband walked away from our ministry and our family. Your devotion for 1-16 and 1-17 was especially dear to me. Thank you for allowing the Lord to use you in my life.”

Sincerely, D.C., Lynchburg, VA
