Making the Most of Family Time

The Mom You’re Meant to Be

The Power of Moms’ and Kids’ Prayers

By Cheri Fuller

One thing I love about prayer is it’s not how old or young you are, whether you’ve had seminary training or are a new believer—God works powerfully when his people pray! Because it’s all about the Lord and his power and plans, not about our degrees, qualifications or eloquence. It’s not about how long or short a time we’ve known God. Our prayers are merely the conduit, but form a vital link.

A Oklahoma City woman I met told me about her five-year-old son Jace who was visiting his grandfather in the hospital. The family had gathered around his bed for what doctors told them would be the very last moments they would see him alive. Coming out of his grandpa’s room, Jace asked his grandma, “What is wrong with Grandpa?”

“Honey, he is very sick,” she answered.

Jace said very loudly, “Oh, God, send down your big Hand and heal my grandpa, right now!”

All of the family members standing around the bed said, “Amen!” To their great surprise, within the hour the elderly man had come out of the coma, his vital signs returned to normal, and he was released from the hospital in a few days. He lived for three more months and during that time committed his life to Christ for the first time. His eternal destiny was changed by the prayers of the youngest member of the family.

Prayer is your greatest resource for your children’s hearts to be changed and spiritual eyes to be opened. You can teach them the truth, take them to the best church and school, but you can’t change their hearts.

Here’s the great news: God is the only One who by his Spirit can change and transform a human heart—turning the person from darkness to light. And it takes a truly changed heart for a young person to resist the downward moral slide all around them in our culture. But God’s heart-changing power is released when we pray.

In the days and weeks ahead, let prayer be your FIRST RESOURCE, not a last resort. It’s your greatest influence for good in the lives of your kids, husband, and those you love. Let me encourage you, P-U-S-H, PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS! And don’t forget to give God the praise for how He works.

“Cheri, I just want to thank you for your book PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE. I already have enjoyed it so much. Each year I look forward to a new devotional and pray for the Lord to lead me to the one He has for me that year. This year He brought me to your book. I have been going through a few difficult years. I have been a pastor’s wife for 29 years til my husband walked away from our ministry and our family. Your devotion for 1-16 and 1-17 was especially dear to me. Thank you for allowing the Lord to use you in my life.”

Sincerely, D.C., Lynchburg, VA
